1. Project Overview & Motivation
Every semester, engineering students purchase expensive textbooks, engineering drawing instruments, lab coats, and scientific calculators that are only used for 4 to 6 months. Meanwhile, senior students have these exact items sitting idle with no safe, structured marketplace to pass them down at affordable rates.
Campus Market was developed as a college minor project to solve this challenge. It provides a lightweight, accessible web platform built specifically for university students to list items for sale, browse verified academic resources, and directly communicate with buyers without third-party commission or shipping delays.
"Students shouldn't have to buy brand-new textbooks every semester when seniors right down the hall have the same books sitting unused. Campus Market connects both sides instantly."
2. Project Objectives
- Affordability: Drastically reduce the academic cost burden for junior students by facilitating 40–70% cheaper peer-to-peer exchanges.
- Safety & Trust: Keep exchanges within the verified college community, reducing the risk of online fraud and spam common on public classified platforms.
- Database Integrity: Apply theoretical Database Management System (DBMS) concepts — normalization (3NF), relational schemas, primary and foreign key constraints, and SQL indexing.
- Responsive Performance: Ensure the web application runs smoothly on campus Wi-Fi and mobile devices using clean semantic HTML5, CSS3, and modern responsive design.
3. Technologies & Tools Used
Backend & Database Architecture
The backend logic was built with PHP 8 running on the XAMPP Apache distribution. Relational data was modeled and managed using MySQL with phpMyAdmin. The database includes normalized tables for:
users— Student accounts, college roll numbers, contact preferences, and password hashes.categories— Hierarchical academic categories (Textbooks, Notes, Electronics, Lab Gear, Miscellaneous).products— Product titles, condition rating, pricing, seller foreign key, image paths, and timestamps.inquiries— Direct message tokens connecting interested buyers with sellers.
Frontend Development
The user interface uses modern semantic HTML, responsive CSS layouts, and vanilla JavaScript for dynamic client-side filtering, form validation, and image previews before upload. All elements were designed for quick load times and high accessibility.
4. Practical Applications & Campus Impact
The platform supports multiple real-world campus use cases:
- Semester Textbook Circulation: Core subjects like DBMS, IWT, Mathematics, and Physics textbooks remain in continuous student circulation across academic sessions.
- Curated Exam Notes: Handwritten class notes, previous year question (PYQ) solutions, and practical lab manuals are shared directly among peers.
- Electronics & Equipment: Safe hand-to-hand exchange for scientific calculators (FX-991ES), Arduino kits, and drawing boards.
5. Key Learnings & Future Roadmap
Building Campus Market provided invaluable practical experience in linking front-end input handling with back-end SQL transactions and session persistence. Future iterations plan to integrate university student email verification (.edu / college domain validation), real-time in-app chat notifications, and enhanced role-based admin moderation.
